Primary school, registration

All children living in Geneva have the right and obligation to attend school, regardless of whether their family has a residence permit or not.

In August 2025, children born between August 1st 2020 and July 31 2021, will start school. Registrations will take place from March 3 to March 8, 2025.

If you have not received a letter from the Département de l’Instruction Publique, we recommend that you contact the school closest to your home or call the Direction Générale de l’Enseignement Obligatoire (DGEO) at 022 327 04 00. They will inform you which school to contact and what documents to provide. More information is available at: www.ge.ch/contacter-trouver-ecole-primaire.

If you have recently arrived in Geneva with a child over 4 years old who is not yet enrolled in school, please contact the nearest school administration.

Mandatory Health Insurance

To attend school, your child must have health insurance. If your child does not have a residence permit, the CCSI can assist with this process. To proceed, make an appointment at CCSI and bring your identity document, your child’s identity document, and proof of address. Your child will be able to start school as soon as this process is completed.

Children aged 12 to 15

Children aged 12 to 15 must enroll in the Cycle d’orientation. If your child does not speak French, you can find more information at: www.ge.ch/en/enrol-my-child-aged-12-15-state-school. You can also contact the Direction générale de l’enseignement obligatoire – Service organisation et planification (Chemin de l’Echo 5A 1213 Onex) at 022 327 04 00.
